We're on the right road for 2024 and beyond!

As we conclude the first week of the new year, I want to pause for a moment to reflect on just two earth-shaking developments of 2023.

Stellantis and United Auto Workers came to terms on a labor agreement that includes a $5 billion commitment to not only reopen the Belvidere Assembly Plant for new truck production but also expand operations with a battery manufacturing facility and parts distribution "mega hub." I'm proud to have sponsored legislation that offered state financial incentives to help save the iconic auto plant and the thousands of jobs that support families across the Rockford-Belvidere region, and I'm grateful that leaders at every level worked together for an outcome that is more than many of us expected.

That fantastic news followed last summer’s announcement that Metra will begin passenger rail service between Rockford, Belvidere and Chicago. Passenger rail -- another priority of mine -- will make our region an even more attractive place to live and work while also providing the skilled labor needed for the plant’s major expansion. I'm equally proud and grateful to have been able to secure $275 million in state funds to pay for this project.

Many other positive events took place in 2023, making me confident our community has a bright future on the horizon. I wish everyone a prosperous 2024 and thank you all for the privilege of continuing to represent you in Springfield.

State Senator Steve Stadelman has announced that three school districts in the Rockford area have received more than $33,000 to enhance library resources with new books, e-books, audiobooks, periodicals, multilingual materials, technology and programs.

"Making sure our libraries are equipped with contemporary resources is a fundamental part of public education," said Stadelman (D-Rockford). "I.m certain students across the Rockford area will benefit from the additional resources that school libraries will now be able to provide."

School districts in Stadelman's 34th state legislative district received a total of $33,723:
  • Rockford Public School District 205 - $22,147
  • Belvidere School District 100 - $6,428
  • Harlem CUSD 122 - $5,147
Based on a statutory formula, school districts receive $0.885 per student enrolled at each school with a qualified library. The grants support school library services for more than 1 million students enrolled in kindergarten through 12th grade across Illinois.

The 2nd annual Blue Christmas service took place at Brooke Road United Methodist Church to remember those who lost their lives to opioid overdose. It was also an opportunity to talk about efforts to prevent overdoses and make treatments more widely available.

State Senator Steve Stadelman said the delays most notably impacted health care as doctors and nurses waiting up to a year for their applications to be processed. But teachers, attorneys, building contractors and barbers also were caught up in the backlog, "harming their ability to provide for their families and negatively affecting the many people these professionals serve across Illinois."
