Recap from 1st week of veto session

State lawmakers returned to their districts Friday after the first week of the fall veto session in Springfield, where votes on major issues were deferred until they return Nov. 7.

Reforms to Illinois nuclear policy are among the questions expected to be addressed when they return in two weeks. The governor vetoed legislation that would have partially lifted the state’s 1980s-era ban on construction of new nuclear plants, but he has signaled his possible support for a new bill that would increase health and safety protections for people living near nuclear reactors.

Proponents of the Invest in Kids tax-credit scholarship rallied in the Capitol this week, although the future program remains unclear. A compromise between making the program permanent and letting the scholarships sunset was introduced this week. Under that proposal, the tax credits would be extended until 2028 and the budget cap would drop from $75 million to $50 million.

Congratulations to L.C. Wilson and everyone else who staged another successful Top of Illinois Veterans Stand Down, Inc. Hundreds of veterans jammed the Rockford Public Library's Nordlof Center for the many resources available to them at the 2023 event.
