Stadelman announces $598.5 million in local transportation projects

More than 80 road projects representing nearly $600 million in state investment are coming soon to the Rockford area as the latest phase of Rebuild Illinois gets underway, State Senator Steve Stadelman announced today.

“Our roadways have gone unimproved and unattended for too long," Stadelman said. "With these funds, we can expect to see some major upgrades to roads and bridges in and around Rockford and Belvidere."

Some of the projects in current round of construction under the Illinois Department of Transportation’s Multi-Year Plan are:

  • Bridge reconstruction and improvements to the US 20 Bypass at I-39

  • Reconstruction and additions along I-39 from Harrison Avenue to Mill Road

  • Reconstruction and roadway repair along U.S. Business 20 from Avon Street to East State Street

  • Pavement overlay on Newburg Road from Shaw Road to Irene Road in Belvidere

  • Bridge replacement and reconstruction on IL 2 from IL 72 in Byron to Beltline Road in Rockford

IDOT’s Multi-Year Plan invests in all modes of transportation: roads and bridges, aviation, transit, freight and passenger rail, waterways, bike paths and sidewalks. To find a full list of upcoming projects in the 34th Senate District, visit IDOT’s website.

"Through Rebuild Illinois, we are modernizing our infrastructure and securing our future," Stadelman said. ”A strong transportation network is an essential building block for economic growth in the Rockford area and across the state."

Congrats to two local groups -- YWCA Northwestern Illinois and Think Big -- for each receiving grants of $100,000 to support women and minority entrepreneurship, skills development and business growth! The money is provided by the Northern Illinois Community Initiatives (NICI), a foundation created by Nicor Gas. The YWCA will use the grant for its Tech Lab, which provides students with training, credential opportunities and internships in the IT field – a field where women are largely underrepresented. Think Big! will use its grant to create a business program specifically catered to women entrepreneurs and the unique challenges they face.
