Dear Friends,
I hope you enjoy the company of family, friends and neighbors and the many outstanding community events taking place this weekend, and I wish you a peaceful and safe holiday celebration. I also hope you spend a few moments reflecting, as I will, on the ultimate sacrifice made by men and women in the armed forces throughout our nation's history. We must never forget that freedom isn't free.

Stadelman praises new state budget as pro-business, pro-education
Debt reduction, extension of historic tax credits among other highlights
State Senator Steve Stadelman released the following statement after the Illinois Senate passed a Fiscal Year 2024 budget and revenue plan that focuses on education and efforts to help struggling communities:
“This is the biggest investment Illinois has made toward higher education in the last twenty years. Illinois is also contributing $350 million to the K-12 school funding formula, which means added resources for the Rockford, Harlem and Belvidere school districts.
“Illinois is making smart investments in paying back our debts while continuing to invest in social, educational and community programs. We have made significant contributions toward SMART Start Illinois and continuing Early Childhood Block Grants to increase preschool availability and access.
“This budget supports businesses and Illinois’ status as a business leader across the nation. By continuing our workforce training and development programs, Illinois is carving a path for the revitalization of communities as we attract new businesses and jobs to our state.
“Illinois is continuing to invest by extending and increasing the Historic Preservation Tax Credits that have helped Rockford and other communities around the state fix up old buildings and put them back on the tax roll.
“I am proud to support this budget and look forward to the work we can do for the residents of Rockford and those all across Illinois.”

Congratulations to the Rockford Fire Department for its powerful, annual hourlong program that reconnects survivors with the emergency responders who saved their lives. That's one of my two summer interns, Jonah C. Garcia, with Fire Chief Michele Pankow, a past year's survivor and Rockford Ald. Isidro Barrios.

Enlightening visit yesterday at Auburn High School for team practice as the IHSA Scholastic Bowl 2023 state champions prepared for an upcoming national competition and the Berstrom Quiz Bowl, which tapes live at 6:30 p.m. today at The RPL Nordlof Center and airs at 7 p.m. Friday on WTVO-17 and 10 p.m. Sunday on WQFR-39. I presented the players and coaches with Certificates of Recognition from the Illinois Senate for their state victory in March.
