Stadelman promotes voter impowerment on first day to cast ballots

State Sen. Steve Stadelmani is urging voters in the November 8 general election to take advantage of early voting and the state's new permanent mail-in ballot law.

As early voting in Illinois began Thursday, Stadelman spoke at a news conference alongside representatives of Women's March Rockford, the NAACP Rockford Branch, the Rockford Hispanic Chamber of Commerce and RAMP.

Stadelman supported legislation sponsored by Rockford State Rep. Maurice West to create a permanent vote-by-mail list that eliminates the need to request mail-in ballots ahead of each new election cycle. The new law allows voters who apply for mail-in ballots to remain on the list until they request to be removed or register to vote in another county or until the election authority receives notification of a change of address or death.

"I'm always in favor of making voting easier, not more difficult," said Stadelman, who held the news conference outside the Rockford Board of Elections with West and State Rep. Dave Vella. "Permanent vote-by-mail certainly benefits seniors and voters with chronic illness or mobility challenges. There's no shortage of examples in the news of close elections where every vote matters and important issues that turn on the outcomes of those elections. These days, the stakes are high and our right to vote should be sacred."

The 156-page election bill approved in the General Assembly in May and signed by the governor in June also requires election authorities to beef up cybersecurity including monthly vulnerability scans and risk assessments every two years.

Voters have been able to request the new permanent mail-in status since August 10, and the Rockford election office was preparing them to be mailed out also starting today. In Rockford, voters can return ballots to a secure drop box in front of the Board of Election office at 301 S. 6th St. or drop them in the U.S. mail.

Deadline is Oct. 17 for lower-income seniors to claim 2022 property tax rebate

State Senator Steve Stadelman advises that Illinois seniors and others not required to file income tax returns have until Oct. 17 to claim property tax rebates of up to $300.

“Many seniors and older Illinois residents may not have filed their taxes last year, and this could be keeping them from seeing their tax rebates,” Stadelman said. “Anyone who has not seen their rebate should check online to see if you qualify for this benefit.”

Under the Illinois Family Relief Plan passed by the Senate, one-time individual income and property tax rebates will be issued to taxpayers who meet certain income requirements. Homeowners who paid Illinois property taxes in 2021 on their primary residence in 2020 are eligible for the property tax rebate.

Taxpayers who claimed a property tax credit on their Illinois income tax return for 2021 (IL-1040) using Schedule ICR do not need to take any additional action and automatically will eceive their property tax rebate. But anyone who did not file an Illinois income tax return for 2021 needs to proactively make a claim by submitting Form IL-1040-PTR, either by mail or electronically through MyTax Illinois. Step-by-step instructions are available here.

“If you did not file your taxes last year and are still paying property taxes on your home, you may qualify for this rebate,” Stadelman said. “Make sure to take advantage of this opportunity and ensure that if you have a rebate waiting for you, that you take action to claim it.”

Additional assistance is available by calling the Illinois Department of Revenue at 1-800-732-8866 or 217-782-3336.
