Stadelman bill would require labeling of political ads that employ artificial intelligence

Legislation introduced by State Senator Steve Stadelman would push back on the use of artificial intelligence to influence election outcomes.

Senate Bill 2762 would require a label on any political advertisement that is AI-generated or what is known as a "deep fake" as soon as this November's general election if approved by lawmakers and signed by the governor.

“Artificial intelligence can be used in good ways," Stadelman said. "But there are bad actors who can deceive voters and lead them to believe something fake is real."

It's about truth in advertising, Stadelman said. Requiring a disclaimer on AI-generated political advertising would be much the same as health warnings on cigarette packages.

“The technology has become really sophisticated the past couple of years people who are watching these ads really have no way of knowing if they’ve been manipulated or generated by artificial intelligence," he said, "and that’s a danger to democracy.”
