Stadelman announces $5 million in extra evidence-based funds for local schools

State Senator Steve Stadelman announced public schools districts in the 34th legislative district that he represents will receive more than $5 million additional dollars as part of the Illinois' evidence-based funding commitment to students attending schools in higher-poverty communities,

“Illinois students deserve the best educational opportunities. With the evidence-based funding formula, we are ensuring our schools have the tools they need,” Stadelman said. “I'm proud to have been part of our state's prioritization of educational opportunities for less privleged students."

Local schools to receive funding through the evidence-based formula include:

• Belvidere Community Unit School District 100: $2,381,222
• Rockford Public Schools: $2,920,485
• Harlem School District 122: $400,956
• Alternative and Safe Schools Programs (Boone-Winnebago Regional Office of Education): $27,330

The additional money comes from the 2017 adoption of a new evidence-based funding formula, which Stadelman supported. The legislation overhauled the way Illinois funds education by factoring in the financial need of individual school districts and basing state-provided resources on those needs. The formula calculates a district’s total enrollment, poverty rate and number of special education or English language learners,mong other factors.

Stadelman law leads to launch of $75 million fund to jump-start construction work across state

State Senator Steve Stadelman joined his former Senate colleague, Illinois Treasurer Mike Frerichs, in Chicago this week to announce the first $75 million investment in FIRST Fund, an investment portfolio to jump-start local construction projects and create good-paying jobs.

"That's good news," Stadelman said, "especially as we head into Labor Day weekend."

Legislation Stadelman sponsored and passed in 2021 makes the $75 million investment possible by empowering the treasurer to allocate up to five percent of the state portfolio with infrastructure investment firms in Illinois. The initial $75 million traunch is going to Ullico Infrastructure Fund, which provides insurance and investment solutions for labor organizations, union employers, institutional investors and union members.

Senator Stadelman's HoopStars has become a Labor Day tradition since its inception in 2013. The event has drawn hundreds of players and hundreds more cheering family members. No fees are charged to enter the tournament, which is open to boys and girls in 5th through 8th grades.

Teams can registration online through game day at www.senatorstadelman.com or sign-up in person when doors open at 10:30 AM. Registration ends at 11 AM, with the tournament starting at noon at the UW Health Sports Factory.

All players receive free commemorative T-shirts, and winners take home medals.

Thanks to Mustafa Abdall, Rockford Refugee Support Program and everyone else involved in the '815 Back to School' event! Organizers say they distributed 600 backpacks full of school supplies, 200 free hot dogs, 480 slices of pizza , 300 ice cream cups, hair cuts and other activities!
